Abstract
With rare unanimity British church leaders have expressed concern about rising levels of poverty and the impact of cuts to welfare spending. At a time when politicians calculate that reducing welfare state provision is popular with the electorate, the churches rightly express a Christian conviction that the needs of all should be met.
