Abstract

The second World War has brought new unknowns to the American breakfast table. Popular interest in Australia and New Zealand up to the present conflict in Europe has been just as conspicuous by its absence as interest in Netherlands India and adjacent regions of Southeast Asia. Now all has been changed. We read of the Pacific Dominions as integral parts of the Empire defense system, as countries undergoing important economic change, and as possible ultimate objects of Japanese aggression. We read, furthermore, of the more than casual interest of the United States Government in the fate of these outposts and even of possible alliances for the defense of Southeast Asia in general, and for the further guarantee of access to strategic raw materials in particular. What does the record show as far as American economic interests are concerned ?
