Abstract

This chapter describes the background, history, and activities of the United Nations mandate on human rights and the environment. The UN Human Rights Council appointed the author in 2012 to be the first independent expert, and in 2015 to be the first special rapporteur, to hold the mandate. In the course of his work, he published reports on the application of human rights law to the environment, identified good practices, received communications, and conducted country visits. In 2018, he ended his term as special rapporteur by presenting Framework Principles on Human Rights and the Environment and calling for the United Nations to recognize the human right to a safe, clean, healthy and sustainable environment.
