Abstract

Following a brief statement on the development of the Industry in the Union, the physical background of the seven magisterial districts which are proclaimed under the Chicory Control Scheme is outlined. The distribution of chicory production within the Areas is presented cartographically and chicory-producing regions are. delimited. The optimum natural conditions for successful cultivation of the root are enumerated and the inputs and outputs in the chicory regions are expressed in monetary terms and discussed comparatively. The Alexandria region emerges as the geographical and economic core of the Industry and it is shown that recent developments in the Industry are exerting a centripetal force on the spatial pattern of production.
