Abstract

The account of the healing of Peter’s mother-in-law (Mt. 8.14-15; cf. Mk 1.29-31) has been rewritten and recontextualized by Matthew so as to recall specific stories about Elisha, specifically, the prophet’s raising of the Sunammite woman’s son (2 Kgs 4.18-37) and the prophet’s call by Elijah (1 Kgs 19.19-21). This editorial activity enhances the Gospel’s characterization of Jesus as a prophet, its characterization of those he heals as disciples, and its characterization of the Christian household as a center of ritual healing.
