The Unintended Legacy of September 11, 1973: Transnational Activism and the Human Rights Movement in Latin America

Abstract

El siguiente articulo se concentra en el impacto que tuvo el golpe de Estado chileno del 11 de Septiembre de 1973 en la formacion de una red transnacional de derechos humanos en America Latina. El articulo discute el caracter ejemplar que tuvieron las operaciones de derechos humanos en Chile para otros paises latinoamericanos, enfocandose en la formacion de una infraestructura transnacional que estimulo y acompano la creacion de organizaciones de derechos humanos a lo largo del continente. El trabajo de las iglesias latinoamericanas y sus aliados internacionales estuvieron en el centro de la expansion del movimiento de derechos humanos que comenzo en los anos setenta en America Latina. Abstract The following article focuses on the impact of the September 11, 1973 coup in Chile on the formation of a transnational human rights network in Latin America. The article discusses the exemplary character of the human rights operations in Chile for other Latin American countries, but focuses on the formation of a transnational infrastructure that stimulated and accompanied the organization of human rights organizations across Latin America. The work of the Latin American churches and their international partners were at the center of the growth of the Latin American human rights movement that began in the 1970s.
