Abstract

The Mental Health Act 1983 provides specific powers to impose medication and electroconvulsive therapy for the treatment of mental disorders. Psychosurgery and hormone implantation remain outside these statutory powers, being subject to a more intricate procedure, and cannot be administered without the patient's express consent and the involvement of multiple professionals. John Finch relates his account of the legal and ethical challenges associated with the administration of these treatments.
