Abstract

This chapter first provides an introduction to the United Nations Compensation Commission (UNCC). It next gives information on the role of the UNCC Governing Council in monitoring the distribution of compensation awards in general, and in the tracking of monitoring and assessment projects funded by the UNCC in particular. The chapter further provides an overview of the Guidelines for the Follow-up Programme for Environmental Awards that was established by the Governing Council of the UNCC in December 2005 in order to monitor, technically and financially, the implementation of the remediation projects that were the subject-matter of the compensation awards approved by the Governing Council, on the basis of recommendations from the F4 panel. Finally, it refers to a related development that has arisen, albeit indirectly, from the environmental claims of the UNCC. Keywords: environmental awards; environmental remediation projects; UNCC Governing Council; United Nations Compensation Commission (UNCC)
