Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to give an overview of the various applications of the ultrasound measurement technique (UMT) applied to energetic material combustion study. The first and main application is the solid propellant regression rate determination. The UMT has been used as an industrial tool, on rocket motors or closed bombs, for controlling the standard ballistic properties of a solid propellant. This is also a research tool aimed to investigate the behavior of a new ingredient or the specific solid propellant combustion regimes, such as the erosive or unsteady burning. Using UMT means a benefit in terms of Quality, Cost and Safety. Its maturity is high, and its cost, including the investment-return, is quite low compared to more conventional techniques.
