Abstract

Section 1. New materials and nanotechnologies (IEEE). The present article is devoted to ultra-small nanoparticles, which have their characteristic size in the 1–3 nm range. It is shown that the order-disorder transition of the nanoparticle structure occurs nearby the upper limit of this range. A new nanomaterial with the unique physical properties is formed after the transition. A method based on the statistical mechanics was developed to describe the order-disorder transition in ultra-small nanoparticles. It was revealed that the percolation clusters exist in nanoparticles if their size is less than the critical one. Those clusters are in the dynamic equilibrium with the defects of the crystalline structure. The unique physical properties emerge due to the dynamic equilibrium.
