Abstract

The synovial tissues about the tendons of flexor sublimis and flexor profundus digitorum appear as a common sheath when injected with contrast medium at post mortem examination. The sheath is prolonged upwards into the forearm in a triangular fashion. It ends at the level where the tendons become continuous with the muscle bellies. The sheath extends into the palm beneath the flexor retinaculum and has its lower margin at the level of the mid palm. The pattern of termination of the sheath has been demonstrated by Scheldrup (1952). He noted that in 70% of cases the digital sheath of the little finger communicates with the ulnar bursa, while the other digital sheaths remain separate. The sheaths are easily injected percutaneously in the lower forearm just above the level of the skin creases on the flexor aspect of the wrist.
