Abstract

A formalism is given for including a two-body spin-orbit (TBSO) interaction in distortedwave calculations of inelastic scattering. Spin and parity selection rules are discussed and a guide is given, based on nuclear matrix elements and isospin considerations, to help decide when the TBSO force may be most important. The role of the TBSO force in the inelastic excitation of several low-lying levels in 90Zr by 61.2 MeV protons is investigated as is the energy dependence of the TBSO interaction. A short discussion of the role of the TBSO force in the inelastic scattering of composite particles is presented, and the contribution of this mechanism to the excitation of the 2 − (8.88 MeV) level in 16O by α-particles is calculated and found to be small.
