Abstract

F + 3 centers can be created efficiently by irradiating colored LiF crystals with nitrogen laser (337 nm) at liquid-nitrogen temperature. The experimental procedure, the spectroscopic properties and the formation mechanism of the two-step creation, and tunable laser operation of F + 3 centers in LiF crystals are described. The laser output extended from 515 nm to 560 nm and peaked at 540 nm.
