The decision to hold the Annual Congress in the spring was, as the President, Dr. James Bull, said in his introductory remarks, an innovation. He hoped that the experiment would result in a greater attendance of members. In actual fact the figure approached 600, as compared with 550 in 1957, which was the last Congress at which a Technical Exhibition was held. There was a record number of visitors from overseas, many from Western European countries as well as from the United States and Canada. The weather was fine and in marked contrast to the dark days of some previous winter Congresses. The general opinion of members was that the innovation was an improvement and, in fact, Council has decided to hold the next Congress at the end of April, 1962.The Opening Address was given by the Rt. Hon. Lord Adrian, O.M., M.D., F.R.S. He was introduced by the President who paid a graceful compliment to his many academic distinctions—“The Master of Trinity, as all Cambridge men know, and others should, is the wisest man in the Kingdom”. He insisted that Lord Adrian was essentially a clinician, and recalled that Lord Adrian had been a house physician at the President's own hospital, the National Hospital for Nervous Diseases. Lord Adrian chose as his subject “Instruments in the Service of Medicine”.
