Abstract
The Troubles-Related Experiences Questionnaire (TREQ) was developed to assess exposure to Troubles-related events in Northern Ireland in childhood and adulthood. It was also designed to measure perceived impacts of Troubles exposure. To examine the initial psychometric properties of the TREQ, it was administered to three Northern Irish clinical samples. The first was 81 individuals receiving psychological treatment following direct exposure to Troubles-related violence. The second came from a rural adult mental health setting, and finally 60 came from an outpatient program for severe and enduring illness, and were diagnosed with bipolar disorder. Principal components factor analysis supported a one-factor solution for both the childhood and adult scales. Three items were deemed weak or inappropriate for the child scale, leaving this measure with 26 items. Two items were deemed unsuitable for the adult scale, leaving it with 27 items.
