Abstract
Although Robert Wallace does an excellent job of describing the Human Genome Diversity Project (HGDP) from its conception in 1991 to the present, it is evident that confusion still abounds about the project. As an American Indian and a geneticist, I wish to convey the perceptions and concerns that the Native Americans of North America have about the HGDP, as well as human and botanical genomic research in general. Our discussion will include the National Research Council's (NRC) report and recommendations, concerns about possible commercialization, commodification and exploitation of indigenous peoples by pharmaceutical companies, the value of diversity research and the future of HGDP and the Human Genome Project (HGP).
