Abstract
When speaking of 17th Triennale in 1983, shows held in autumn of 1984, Elective Affinities show held in spring of 1985, and especially of final outcome of this series, great planned for 1986, we cannot avoid thinking again of Triennale's distant past. This reflection helps both to understand Triennale's evolution and to evaluate its perspectives. The Triennale is surely a force of Italian scene not to be disregarded, and through its course decline of applied art and rise and affirmation of industrial design made in Italy can be identified. But, international role that this exhibition played in past should also be remembered. In fact, for many years, in absence of other forums, it was only place for continuous comparison of design experiences from different countries. The Triennale spread modern taste for furniture and industrial production and provided architecture with opportunity for possible experimental statements. Its golden years were between two wars. After World War II, between 1947 and 1968, Triennale adhered to reality still partially expressed by planning and construction of experimental district QT 8 or by attention to theme of house as point where many interests converge. Lately this adherence has waned. Many attempts to link up with industrial growth and changes in contemporary society have been made. Along these lines, 14th Triennale in 1968 was organized and dedicated to world population explosion.1 The 15th Triennale was done on sly; a larger presence of forces engaged in culture of project,2 most in Milan, convened in a council for democratic reconstruction of Triennale. The 16th exhibition, not an international one, was located in a decaying building with inadequate financing; such is recent past of organization. The 17th Triennale, which opened in April 1983 in restored Palazzo dell'Arte with a $5 million public appropriation, now wants to gather people for an international debate in 1986; subject is to be the city of year 2000.
