Abstract

The jetty is a unique floating structure providing weapons handling facilities within a covered berth for the Vanguars class of Trident submarines. With a displacement of about 85 000 t, it is one of the largest floating concrete structures in the world. The paper describes the development of the jetty concept, including the reasons for choosing a floating structure, the jetty structure, the design philosophy and the tender process. A second paper describes the construction, tow and commissioning of the jetty.
