Abstract

AbstractThis chapter describes the general morphology, life cycle and taxonomy of medically important trematodes, as well as the specific morphology, life cycle, local names and geographical distribution of Schistosoma spp., Paragonimus westermani, Achillurbainia nouveli, Clonorchis sinensis, Opisthorchis viverrini, Opisthorchis felineus, Dicrocoelium dendriticum, Fasciola hepatica, Fasciolopsis buski, Heterophyes heterophyes, Metagonimus yokogawai, Gastrodiscoides hominis, Echinostoma ilocanum, other echinostomids, and other occasional and rare human-parasitic trematodes. The clinical manifestations, pathogenesis, location in host, immunology, diagnosis, treatment (drug therapy, surgery), epidemiology, prevention and control, and zoonotic aspects of the infections caused by these organisms are reviewed. The different snail intermediate hosts and their control are also discussed.
