Abstract

The treatment of inverted papilloma of the nose and paranasal sinuses has evolved over the past 20 years. Due to a high rate of recurrence, an association with malignancy, and a tendency of multicentricity, the surgical approaches are discussed controversially. Whereas simple endonasal excision was followed by radical external approaches like lateral rhinotomy or less radical midfacial degloving, recent studies report adequate treatment by endonasal endoscopic excision. The purpose of this article is to shed light on this issue. In a series of 37 patients, we used the endonasal micro-endoscopic approach in 22 cases, and as a special technique, the enlarged endonasal maxillary sinus operation in 11 cases. According to the literature and our own experience, inverted papilloma of the nose and paranasal sinuses can be successfully treated with endonasal approaches.
