Abstract

The purpose of this article is to describe our experience with the management of hip fractures in children with spinal cord injury (SCI). All cases of pathologic hip fractures in children with SCI treated at our institution from 1992 to the present were reviewed. There were seven hip fractures--five treated with internal fixation and two with immobilization. There were six complications in seven fractures--three associated with immobilization and three associated with surgical treatment. All patients maintained functional range of motion. Surgical treatment had little additional morbidity as compared to immobilization alone. If surgical treatment is to be undertaken, a sideplate with derotational screw should be used.
