Abstract

The study is dedicated to a topic considered, for a long period, as obviously clear insofar as the ruler's power was supposed to be hereditary. The idea of the present article is to examine the transmission of power in Bulgaria during the last century before the Ottoman conquest. The study analyse the topic from the pagan period up to the Second Bulgarian Empire. The main focus consists in the transmission of power in the case of Assen family during the 14th century. Along with the Byzantine influence it is underlined some Bulgarian particularities and the specific context in which the transmission of power occurred.
