Abstract

The weighted residual method of Galerkin is applied to several rectangular ducts of various widths with a boundary layer on all four walls, two of which are lined with an acoustic material. The validity of employing the Galerkin method to problems of this type is demonstrated by performing computations to check the convergence of the method and by investigating limiting cases of the rectangular duct for which more exact results are known. In summary, the Galerkin method is a reliable method for treating the problem of sound propagation in acoustically treated ducts in which the sheared flow profile is a function of two spatial variables.
