Abstract
Abstract Discussions of the translatability of Ḥāfiẓ’s ghazals and critiques of Hāfiz translations usually do not offer a definition of poetry as a starting point or focus on the skills of translators whose translations are being critiqued. “The Translatability of Ḥāfiẓian Love Ghazals” examines English translations by two poets expert in Persian poetry—can anyone but poets produce poems in translation?—within the contexts of an Anglo American definition of poetry and Iranian commentaries on Ḥāfiẓ’s poems. The article concludes with the unsurprising view that the poetry in Ḥāfiẓian love ghazals may not get lost in translations by poets expert in Persian, but that the English poetry in such translations may not communicate the multidimensionality and suggestiveness of the poetry in the Persian.
