Abstract

Conditions for the transition from the Townsend to the streamer mechanism of breakdown in air at uniform fields are described analytically in terms of primary ionization and secondary cathode effects. A criterion for the electrical breakdown of air is developed and shown to be in excellent agreement with experimental data.
