Abstract

AbstractThis paper analyses the Middle and Late Bronze Age levels of one area (Trench I, Area 200) at Tell Nebi Mend, currently being excavated by an expedition from the Institute of Archaeology, University College London. Eight main architectural phases and some twenty depositional subphases are identified, and the main ceramic forms from each are described, illustrated and discussed. Comparison of the Tell Nebi Mend stratigraphy and pottery with evidence from other central Syrian sites suggests that the frequently postulated theory of a gap in occupation between the Middle and Late Bronze Ages at many of these sites, for example Ras Shamra and Hama, is the result of inappropriate methodology rather than any real recession in settlement.
