Abstract

An extension of the direct finite element analysis is presented herein to study the transient dynamic behavior of non-uniform, non-homogeneous beams. These elements, which are encountered in practice, provide a basis for the comparison of the dynamic behavior of members in which there are internal discontinuities (material and geometric) with those which do not possess these irregularities. The effects of these material perturbations are discussed from both a theoretical and design point of view. Several examples are solved and their behaviors discussed. Design criteria are explained.
