Abstract

A transient solution of the problem of a mode-III crack propagating along the interface between two different media is obtained. The compound body is loaded by a constant shear traction at infinity such that it is under antiplane deformation. The method of self-similar potentials is introduced to solve the self-similar problem. It is assumed that the speed of the crack tip is less than the minimum of the SH-wave speed of these two materials. For this subsonic case, the singularities of velocities and stresses occurring at crack tips are always of inverse square root type. The dynamic stress intensity factor and crack tearing displacement are found. Asymptotic solutions near wave fronts are also obtained for this problem.
