Abstract

Abstract Hybridization in the Brazilian automobile industry is not closely linked to Japanese transplants. In the 1990s there is only one Japanese automobile assembler operating in Brazil (Toyota), and that one only manufactures a single light commercial vehicle in low volumes with conventional technology and work processes. Instead, American and European assemblers constitute the bulk of the Brazilian automobile industry. These assemblers have recently strongly emphasized the introduction of Japanese-inspired concepts and techniques, adapting them to their global strategies and local circumstances.
