The purpose of this essay is to analyze the three works as examples of the modem comedia de magia, focusing on their relationship to the eighteenth and nineteenth-century form. In particular, Benavente's version of each builds on traditional fobktales instead of classical mythology or Biblical themes and evokes social, moral, and philosophical concerns.
