Abstract
Western-style modern theatre has already become a tradition in Japan. In the following article, critic and director Tsuno Kaitarō examines why Western theatre managed such a strong foothold in the last 80 years. He then suggests a number of fascinating reasons why many Japanese theatre artists in the last decade have begun to attempt to transcend this Western influence by tapping not only their own imaginations but their own history and traditions as well.
