Abstract

This note consists of a self-assessment instrument by which organizations can measure importance and performance on the 14 dimensions of the Toyota Production System as delineated by Jeffrey Liker in his book Toyota Way. Excerpt UVA-OM-1221 Rev. Jan 10, 2014 The Toyota Production System: A Self-Evaluation Instrument The manufacturing processes known as the Toyota Production System (TPS) have been studied by academics and practitioners as a model of manufacturing excellence and have been used as a benchmark globally. In a recent book, Jeffrey Liker identified 14 management principles that he believed were key to successful implementation of TPS. Exhibit 1 consists of a score sheet that can be used to measure an organization's implementation of these principles. The score sheet asks for evaluations along two dimensions: importance to the organization and the organization's performance. Thus, an organization can be evaluated not only on how well it is performing, but also on how important doing well on a particular principle is.
