Abstract

It has been shown 1 that the critical load for lateral or torsional buckling of an axially loaded column restrained at finite intervals may be calculated as if the restraint were continuous. Using this simplified idealization the following article extends the analysis to the full range of loading and eccentricity about both axes of the section. The phenomenon is shown to be mathematically analogous to the flexural behaviour of a strut or tie in an elastic medium, and by setting the rotational restraint equal to zero, the analogue is a simple strut or tie in flexure. Thus the results of much analytical work in these two apparently remotely related fields can be transferred to the solution of the problem under examination.
