Abstract

Archaeological excavation and occasional chance finds have brought to light many of the surgical tools used in classical antiquity, especially those used in the Roman period. When these instruments are examined in connection with the medical authors of the time, they can frequently be identified and their purposes understood. Their number and variety show how surprisingly active and enterprising Greek and Roman surgeons were.
