Abstract

Abstract Background The last decade has seen great improvements in cancer care and prevention. A lot of initiatives followed in order to provide policy recommendations to manage these changes and implement the advances. These recommendations do not allow to solve practical implementation issues. In the framework of the third Joint Action on cancer control, iPAAC, the Roadmap is intended to facilitate the implementation of cancer control actions in European Member States (EU MS). As the identification of best practices in the field of cancer control implementation is challenged by country-specific contexts, the Roadmap will provide with options for the implementation. These examples were collected through interviews held in EU MS to collect practice and experience and by 6 work packages, which delivered thematic results regarding the specific cancer control domain. Results The iPAAC Roadmap has been developed to be a mutual learning tool. It is foreseen as a web-based tool and presented as a searchable repository of examples of implemented actions. The Roadmap gathers all results from EU Joint Actions on cancer control as well as the evidence, background documents and legal frameworks related to the implementation of the examples provided. Conclusions Many EU MS do face similar implementation challenges and some of them developed innovative approaches to overcome these barriers. An organized and facilitated mutual learning was therefore needed to gather knowledge and experience, leading to the improvement of cancer control among EU MS. It allows the identification of remaining gaps, providing with key information on additional efforts needed at the EU level, especially in terms of research. Key message Roadmap will bring a solution that can help EU MS address the challenges in cancer control through mutual learning and/or by research efforts at the EU level.
