Abstract

An archaic type of Tarahumara blanket, the tiruta, is still made in the Batopilas, Chihuahua, area. The tiruta, as opposed to the frazada, or wearing blanket, is square rather than rectangular, is more tightly woven, and has tassel ties in the corners. Tirutas probably survive in this area because of their double function as a blanket and carrying device.
