Abstract

AbstractAn equation is given, which describes the time-course of isotonic and isometric twitches of cat's tibialis anticus and soleus. The equation divides the twitch into two parts, separated by the inflection point of the descending branch. At this inflection point the second derivative of the curves changes abruptly from negative to positive values. The first part is assumed to indicate the course of development of the active process, the second that of its dissipation. The equation allows the quantitative assessment of the influence of the load or initial tension on the twitches. A comparison is made of isotonic and isometric twitches in the slow and the fast muscle.
