Abstract

Purpose: Joint injury often triggers acute inflammation, which has been identified as a contributor to the development of post-traumatic osteoarthritis (OA). The extent of acute inflammation and its resolution as modulated by the trade-off between pro- and anti-inflammatory mediators determines the outcome of joint injury. Complete resolution of inflammation limits the progression towards OA, whereas persistent inflammation is associated with chronic damage. Understanding the dynamics of joint inflammation and resolution in early-stage OA may help to find the timing for arresting the inflammation or identify a window to promote the resolution of inflammation in the joint, thereby limiting the progression of OA.
