Abstract

The contribution to the three-nucleon force based on the Δ-mechanism for pion production and absorption in two-nucleon scattering is investigated. A force model with Δ-isobar and pion degrees of freedom is defined. It is tested in the two-nucleon system above pion threshold. It is applied to the three-nucleon bound state. Competing Δ-processes contribute to the triton binding energy with a small net result. The effective three-nucleon force arising from the force model with Δ-isobar and pion degrees of freedom is compared to the concept of an instantaneous three-nucleon force.
