Abstract

The three ages of Algerian emigration was first published in 1977 in the Actes de la Recherche en Sciences Sociales (Sayad 1977). Abdelmalek Sayad started his career as a research assistant for Pierre Bourdieu with whom he co-published Le deracinement: la crise de l’agriculture traditionnelle en Algerie (Bourdieu and Sayad 1964), an ethnography of the transformations of Algerian Berber culture at the end of the decolonisation war. Back in France, he refocused his work on immigration and more specifically on the identity dynamics induced by the migration process.
