Abstract

It is amazing how, years after a catastrophe occurs, we can easily recall exactly where we were at the moment when news of the disaster was broadcast. Examples are when the space shuttle Challenger exploded on takeoff, killing its entire crew, or when Pan American Flight 759 crashed seconds after taking off from the New Orleans airport. I know that no matter how hard we try, none of us will be able to forget where we were when terrorists used aircraft to strike the United States on September 11, 2001. Most active ENA members were en route to Florida for our Annual Meeting. We will probably never comprehend the hatred behind such terrorist attacks, but as emergency medical care providers, we must prepare ourselves for more such occurrences.
