Abstract

ABSTRACT The essay deals with colonial exploration in southwest New Guinea in the early 20th century. The expedition concerned was a large-scale, complex, and risky undertaking in an area that was hardly known at the time. The essay reviews the diary written by Gerard Versteeg, a staff member of the expedition. Versteeg was a physician, but in addition to his medical work he had to perform other tasks. His diary provides a day-to-day account of the course of events.
