Abstract

The thermodynamic parameters for nickel malonate complex formation have been determined in the water-rich region of water-dioxane mixtures by a spectrophotometric technique. The mole percentages of dioxane in the solvents used in this study were 0·0, 2·0, 4·2 and 6·4. The formation constants at 25°C and zero ionic strength in these solvents were 1·06 × 10 4, 3·21 × 10 4, 3·26 × 10 4 and 2·62 × 10 4 respectively. The single ion enthalpies of transfer from water to the water-dioxane mixtures were determined for nickel(II) and the malonate ion using a calorimetric technique. The thermodynamic data and single ion enthalpies of transfer data are in good agreement.
