Although originally employed primarily because of their local irritant and vesicant action on the skin and mucous membranes, it was soon recognized that when absorbed they exert a toxic action on a variety of tissues.In animals subjected to toxic doses,1the tissues most severely involved are the mucosa of the gastrointestinal tract and the hemopoietic tissues.
