Abstract

The article under discussion examines the mechanism of the therapeutic effect of the medicinal leech Hirudo medicinalis. Today, studying the composition of the saliva of medicinal leeches is of the greatest relevance. The secretion of leech saliva contains a whole complex of biologically active substances — it contains more than a hundred medicinal components, enzymes, hormones, vitamins and amino acids, as well as a special substance hirudin, which makes the blood more fluid, which prevents the formation of unnecessary platelets. This is an indispensable way to prevent heart attacks, strokes and thrombosis. The author of the article believes that proof of the medicinal properties of specific components of saliva can lead to the development of new drugs or therapeutic methods.
