Abstract

The aim of this paper is to see to what extent the processes taking place during the exposure and development of a photographic emulsion can be understood in terms of the conceptions of present-day quantum mechanics. The problem has recently been discussed by Webb (I936), to whose paper we are considerably indebted; we believe it possible, however, to push the analysis further than has been done by him. We may conveniently divide our discussion into two main parts; first, that dealing with the direct photolytic reduction of silver halides; and second, that dealing with the latent image and its subsequent chemical or physical development.
