Abstract

In a population which is mainly self-fertilized the majority of nonlethal mutant genes are present in homozygotes and very few in heterozygotes. The intensity of selection for dominance must therefore be less than in an outbred species. Since, however, dominance is often commoner in inbred than in outbred species, Fisher’s theory appears to stand in need of modification.
