Abstract
AbstractThe effect of fields of lower symmetry (in the crystal field approximation) on the energy levels of trivalent chromium ions in the zinc tungstate lattice is discussed. Calculations show that the optical spectra previously reported [1] can be interpreted in terms of a field of rhombic symmetry acting on the Cr3+ ion provided we include the effects of tetragonal distortion in the excited states.
