The theory of rank-size distributions in archaeological settlement patterns

Abstract

Archaeologists of Mesopotamia discovered a four-level administrative and political hierarchy that characterised first generation kingdoms. They used a model developed by geographers to describe settlement size distributions. This paper provides a more complete theory that accounts for all known data.
