Abstract

An analytical procedure for the prediction of sound transmission loss (STL) of sandwich panels has been developed based on an analytical model consisting of two thin infinite elastic or viscoelastic face sheets with an absorptive core material between the sheets. The expression for sound transmission coefficient is presented with the aim of acoustic optimization of the sandwich panels. Theoretical predictions of the STL of sandwich panel constructions have been carried out to investigate the dependence of the sound insulation performance on the structural parameters. For verification. the predicted STL results of two examples are compared with existing experimental values. It is shown that the theory presented here can give satisfactory STL prediction for the sandwich panels with fibrous cores and with no mechanical connection between the two face sheets.
